1894 August Hagborg "The Peasant's Return" Photogravure Goupil Antique Ltd. Ed.

Vilhelm Nikolaus August Hagborg (1852-1921) was a Swedish Naturalism Painter (who became more abstract in his late years) who imagined historical motifs and then painted them from his “mind’s eye.” This peasant’s return topic was an imagining of a French peasant couple returning to their farmlands and getting back to work after the turmoil of the French Revolution. Gagborg spent half his adult life in France. The detail is so fine it looks like a photograph. Dimensions are 8 5/8” by 10 7/8” for the picture and 14 1/2” by 18 7/8” fit the entire heavy stock cotton India paper print surface. This is an original licensed reprint of the day, called a “Photogravure” by the French based company “Goupil.” There were probably 1000 to 1500 copies like this made by Photogravure Goupil in this Sepia style elaborate reprint technology of the day, and it was made in 1894. Condition is excellent for a 128 year old piece of art. Goupil used copper plates to create this detailed, somewhat darkish look.
